The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has identified the 15-year-old victim who was shot Tuesday morning in Martindale.
CPS says an autopsy has identified the victim as Sarah Alexis Jorquera.
The Calgary Board of Education confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the victim attended Crescent Heights High school.
“We recognize this information may be upsetting for parents and students. Upon return from the spring break, councellors will be available through CBE’s Critical Response Team for students requiring support,” reads the statement.
Police were called to Martin Crossing Crescent at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a “shooting in an alley.”
In an update, officers say it happened on Martindale Drive NE, and the teen was shot while in the passenger seat of a vehicle and believe the driver of the vehicle fled to Martin Crossing Crescent to call the police.
Meanwhile, police say the suspects fled in an “unknown direction” and believe the shooting was targeted, but they have not determined whether the victim and the driver were the intended targets.
Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit says they “have more questions than answers” at this time.
“Losing a 15-year-old is a tragic loss for our community, her school, her friends, and most importantly, her family,” Schiavetta added.
Anyone with dashcam footage from the Martindale area or specifically Martindale Drive between 1 a.m. and 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
