Calgary downtown CTrain station to include Bow Valley College in name

Calgary city council has given final approval to rename the CTrain station right outside its door.

Calgary’s Bow Valley College announced a recent change to a station sitting right on its front door, and it’s no surprise what it is.

“We are pleased City Council approved the College’s proposal to rename the City Hall CTrain platforms to City Hall – Bow Valley College,” said Dr. Misheck Mwaba, president and CEO of Bow Valley College, in a statement.

Mwaba garnered the support of the school’s faculty and student associations, Athabasca University, the University of Lethbridge, and Arts Commons.

A notice of motion was sponsored by Coun. Terry Wong earlier in the year It went back to council Tuesday, where a decision was made on the name change.

A 2019 Bow Valley College survey on commuting behaviour says 89 per cent of students and 55 staff at the school use transit.

The school says this is part of its renewed focus on active travel modes and continued investment in transit and other modes of transportation.

“Our goal is to shift to 60 per cent LRT and bus use by 2031, during peak periods,” Mwaba said.

Bow Valley College says adding its name at its doorstep “recognizes the significance of our downtown campus.”

“It also provides an important, identifiable landmark for students and visitors to our campus,” Mwaba said.

“We look forward to seeing the signage go up at the City Hall – Bow Valley College Station and hearing the stop announcements as the trains roll in.”
