Bowness death may have been overdose, identity still unknown: Calgary police

Calgary police say the cause of death of a woman in Bowness is undetermined but say it may have been the result of a drug overdose.

The woman’s body was found on Sunday on 36 Avenue NW amid an ongoing investigation at the home.

The autopsy was completed Tuesday, and police believe the death is not criminal, however, they are still working to determine her identity.

Officers also allege they were not contacted immediately after she was found.

Nearly two weeks earlier, officers reported a woman’s body found in Forest Heights was moved and determined the person had died of a drug overdose.

They also said investigators were working on three separate cases “where a victim’s death was likely the result of an overdose” and said instead of calling 9-1-1, witnesses transported and disposed of the body.

Meanwhile, officers remind Calgarians of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, which provides legal protection for those seeking emergency help during an overdose to “reduce fear of police attending the scene.”

In some cases, it can protect people from facing charges relating to possession of a controlled substance and breach of conditions.

However, investigators say moving and disposing of a body can result in criminal charges being laid, such as indignity to a body.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
