Man with sledgehammer shot by Calgary police, ASIRT continues investigation

Alberta’s police watchdog is continuing its investigation after an incident involving a man with a sledgehammer escalated to a police shooting in Calgary Forest Lawn.
Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says Calgary police received a complaint about a man with a weapon on the corner of 10 Avenue and 39 Street SE on July 22.
Officers say the resident fled the property and was again confronted on the street. Then, the man started striking a parked vehicle with the sledgehammer.
ASIRT says one police officer arrived around 6 a.m. and turned on their body-worn camera. A second officer arrived afterward.

Then, police used stun guns and OC spray on the man, but he did not let go of the hammer.
As a result, one of the officers shot the man once in the arm.
Police say first aid was provided at the scene, adding the man was taken to hospital.
No additional information was released.
