One lucky Canadian will soon learn they will be cashing in a record-breaking prize in this week’s Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball jackpot.
The all-time high jackpot will be drawn on Wednesday night and someone is guaranteed to win $68 million after the gold ball wasn’t drawn on Saturday night.
Under the current format, the lottery features 30 balls – 29 white balls, each representing the guaranteed $1 million prize, and one Gold Ball representing the growing jackpot. If a white ball is drawn, the guaranteed $1 million prize is won and that ball is removed leaving 28 white balls and one Gold Ball for the next draw.
“We’ve gone 30 draws without that gold ball dropping,” says the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission’s (OLG) Tony Bitonti. “That gold ball is the only ball left.”
The previous largest LOTTO 6/49 jackpot win was in April 2023 when a $64 million ticket was sold in New Brunswick. A $64 million jackpot was also won in 2015 by a Mississauga resident.
The most recent Gold Ball jackpot was won back on June 14, 2023 when a ticket sold in Niagara Falls collected $42 million.
The OLG is reminding everyone who bought a ticket to make sure they check and see if they won. In June, a $70 million OLG LOTTO MAX ticket went unclaimed in Scarborough after a June 28, 2023, deadline passed without anyone rightfully coming forward with the correct numbers.
Those still looking to enter the draw for Wednesday’s record prize have until 10:30 p.m. to purchase a ticket.
