Calgary police charge second man in 1994 double murder

Calgary police have charged a second person in a double murder that happened nearly 30 years ago.

Investigators say on July 11, 1994, two people broke into a home on 10 Avenue SE, shooting and killing two men.

The suspects fled the home, and the victims were later identified as 26-year-old Barry Christian Buchart and 25-year-old Trevor Thomas Deakins.

Police say the motive is thought to be associated with the sell of marijuana out of the home.

Despite an intensive investigation, police weren’t able to identify the shooters.

Since then, the file has been “investigated several times” according to Calgary police.

In 2019, 25 years later, homicide investigators reopened the case and used existing forensic evidence to help find one of the suspects.

Police then arrested and charged 51-year-old Calgarian Leonard Brian Cochrane with two counts of first-degree murder.

After charges were laid, police continued to look for the second person, while also using advancements in forensic technology and techniques.

This helped police to identify and arrest a second suspect on Thursday, Nov. 16.

Stuart Douglass MacGregor, 54, has now been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

“Over the past 29 years, there has been significant advancement in forensic technology, which allows investigators to re-examine evidence that may have been collected years prior,” Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson said in a statement. “This is yet another example of our commitment to the pursuit of justice, no matter how much time has passed.”

MacGregor is set to appear in court on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

As the case is ongoing in court, police won’t be sharing anymore information.
