Jason Nixon taking step back from Ministry after son seriously injured in vehicle rollover

Alberta’s Minister of Seniors, Community, and Social Services is taking time away from his post after his teenage twins were in a vehicle accident Friday, which left his son with critical injuries.

In a statement posted to X, formerly Twitter, Monday, Jason Nixon — also the MLA for Rocky Mountain House-Sundre — said his youngest kids, twins Austin and Chyanne, were involved in an accident on Dec. 1.

While his daughter was not severely injured and is recovering, Nixon said his son is in critical but stable condition.

“We would like to thank every volunteer firefighter, first responder, STARS member, and medical professional who attended the accident and got our children to the help they needed,” he said in a statement. “We also thank the incredible medical team who are working around the clock to support Austin.

“Your professionalism and care have been incredible and it makes us proud to be from our community and to be Albertan.”

Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Dan Williams will be supporting Nixon in his role as Minister of Seniors, Community, and Social Services for the time being, to ensure that all necessary work gets completed.

“At this time, we ask for understanding as Jason focuses on his most important job as “Dad” and prioritizes our children and family,” Nixon and his wife, Tiffany, said.

Support poured in for the Nixon’s across social media, including from Premier Danielle Smith.

“Our thoughts are with your entire family right now,” she wrote, in part, on X. “We are all her to support you with anything you need and are praying for Chyanne and Austin’s full recovery.”
