Calgary police investigate NW fatal home invasion, hours after 3 injured in similar incident

Two home invasions in northwest Calgary have left one man dead, while five are in hospital with serious injuries. Henna Saeed reports on the first homicide of 2024.

Calgary police are on scene of a fatal home invasion in the northwest Thursday morning, just hours after a similar incident in a nearby neighbourhood left three injured.

Police are in Brentwood after receiving a call around 9:15 a.m. Thursday.

Officers responded to reports of a home invasion on Braden Crescent NW, where they found two people injured and one man dead.

The Homicide Unit is now investigating and police are in the process of speaking with multiple witnesses.

A neighbour that spoke to CityNews on the scene, and asked not to be identified, said an older couple had lived in the home for many years but has moved out.

They say the property is now owned by their son, and a few years ago, police were around the property, asking about his whereabouts.

“Just hearing about that anywhere in the city is awful but then finding out its your neighbour, its really, really awful for sure,” the neighbour told CityNews.

Will Blain, who works at a business within walking distance of the house in question, told CityNews he had his store robbed a few weeks ago.

Now, this incident is making him question the safety of the neighbourhood.

“It definitely makes me uncomfortable. I wish the community was safer,” Blain said. “You know as Calgarians and Canadians, we always, I always like to think that we look out for each other in our community. So incidents like these are very troubling to say the least, for sure.”

An autopsy on the man is set for Friday, Jan. 5.

Thursday morning’s investigation comes following another incident Wednesday night where three people were injured in a suspected home invasion in the northwest community of Capitol Hill.

Police say there is nothing at this time to indicate the incidents are connected, though investigators aren’t ruling that out.
