Cases of mumps reported in southern Alberta: AHS

By Darren Rathwell

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it’s confirmed two cases of mumps at a daycare in the province’s south zone, which includes Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

Parents were notified of the cases on Jan. 5.

The province hasn’t said where in the south zone the cases were found, but do say three cases of the disease were reported in the south zone between December and January, the first of which was travel related.

There are unconfirmed reports that doctors have also been notified of the cases.

The vaccine for the mumps is free of charge when kids hit 12 months of age.

That particular shot also protects against measles, rubella, and chicken pox.

The province says Alberta say 13 confirmed cases of the mumps last year, two of which were in the Calgary zone.
