A Calgary police officer has been charged with sexual assault.
Cst. Brandon Kan has been with the service for five years, but has been relieved with pay after the Calgary Police Service (CPS) was made aware of the investigation back in October.
While the investigation was underway months ago, charges were laid on Wednesday, as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Teams (ASIRT), needed to determnine whether or not evidence met their standard for prosecution.
CPS says the accused and victim didn’t meet while the constable was on duty.
His duty status is currently up for review, and he is scheduled to appear in court on March 20.
CPS says it knows serious allegations of this nature involving the conduct of service members, even while off-duty, can impact public trust and confidence.
