ALERT seizes $80K in drugs, loaded gun in search of Calgary, Cochrane homes

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) have seized more than $80,000 worth of cocaine and methamphetamine from homes in Calgary and Cochrane, the agency said Wednesday.

The organized crime bureau of ALERT made the seizure on Feb. 8 with the help of Cochrane RCMP and Calgary police.

Properties searched in the investigation were in Calgary’s Acadia and Montgomery neighbourhoods, and in the area of Heritage Boulevard in Cochrane.

Officials say the homes were searched as part of an investigation that began in December.

ALERT had received information about suspected drug trafficking taking place in the Calgary and Cochrane areas.

A loaded hand gun was seized during the searches, as were 387 grams of cocaine, 746 grams of methamphetamine, and $1,015 in cash.

Police say the gun was previously reported as stolen in an October 2023 break-and-enter. It will be submitted for forensic analysis and ballistics testing to the Provincial Firearms Solutions Lab to determine if it was used in any other crimes.

Kenneth Funk is now facing 10 charges related to drugs and firearms, according to ALERT.

The 60-year-old was released from custody ahead of his next court hearing on March 18, 2024.

Members of the public who suspect drug or gang activity in their neighbourhood are encouraged to call local police, or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
