Speed likely a factor in head-on crash that left driver in critical condition: Calgary police

Police believe speed was a factor in a serious head-on crash in southeast Calgary on Wednesday afternoon and they are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward.

Emergency crews were called to the area of 61 Avenue SE and 84 Street SE around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a collision resulting in injury.

Investigators believe a Hyundai hatchback was travelling westbound on 61 Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and crossed centre line before colliding with a semi-truck.

The 29-year-old driver of the Hyundai was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The 44-year-old driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and was not injured.

Police say speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage to contact them.
