One person was taken to hospital with serious burn injuries following a blaze in a four-story apartment building in the northeast community of Coventry Hills, one of two fires tackled by the Calgary Fire Department Wednesday night.
Calgary Fire says around 11:15 p.m., crews were called to Country Village Park in Coventry Hills.
When they arrived, firefighters found a multi-family apartment building with smoke showing from a second-floor window.
Upon entering the building, crews found heavy smoke in the unit where the fire started, and running fire sprinklers.
Firefighters searched the unit and found one person in a bedroom with serious burn injuries.
The man in his mid-thirties was determined to be the only person in the apartment at the time of the fire.
The entire apartment block of over 60 units was evacuated while crews ensured the fire was completely out.
CFD says the apartment where the fire started was significantly damaged by fire and water, and the apartment below was damaged by water and had minor smoke damage.
Residents of damaged apartments were allowed to re-enter.
Firefighters stayed on scene for several hours following the blaze but were gone by the early hours of Thursday morning.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
At the same time as crews were battling this incident in the northeast, another fire was reported on Bannister Road SE.
Firefighters were called to a fire in a detached storage structrure in Midnapore that was unoccupied.
The cause of that fire is also under investigation.
