Man rescued from basement during Okotoks house fire

One person was sent to hospital in non-life-threatening condition following a house fire in Okotoks.

One person was rescued from the basement of a home in Okotoks as crews responded to a fire on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Maple Street around 2:30 p.m. and encountered black smoke coming from the basement.

Officials say a man was trapped inside the basement of the home. Fire crews were able to quickly rescue the man and he was rushed to hospital in non-life-threatening condition with burns and smoke inhalation.

“I’m pretty sure within a few minutes it would have been a different situation,” says Okotoks fire chief Trevor Brice. “He was probably unconscious from the smoke.”

No other injuries were reported.

Brice said the majority of the damage to the home was internal.

Investigators believe the fire started in the basement but they are still trying to determine the cause. Officials are also trying to determine if there were working smoke alarms inside the home.
