Gord Downie’s brother reflects on directing Tragically Hip docuseries ahead of CIFF screening

To mark its 25th anniversary, the Calgary International Film Festival will be hosting a special Alberta premiere screening of an upcoming Tragically Hip docuseries.

The four-part ‘Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal’ tells the love story between a band and the country they call home with lots of never-before-seen clips of the Canadian rock & roll legends as the Hip “share the story of their unique, complicated and wildly successful musical brotherhood.”

The premiere screening will take place on Sep. 18, one night before the official kickoff of this year’s festival. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Aug. 28.

“The Tragically Hip are Canada’s band and CIFF couldn’t be happier to celebrate our 25th anniversary and the band’s 40th anniversary with this intimate and emotional documentary,” said CIFF artistic director Brian Owens in a statement. “Calgary is one of only four cities in the world where Hip fans can catch this on the big screen.”

The project’s director, Mike Downie, brother of the band’s late frontman Gord Downie, will be in attendance on the red carpet and will take part in a special Q&A post-screening.

Downie sat down to speak with 660 NewsRadio Calgary’s Todd Kaufman to chat about the bittersweet experience chronicling the band that had been together for close to 40 years.
