Province warns of aggressive grizzly bear after attack north of Calgary

Alberta officials are warning of an aggressive grizzly bear, about 45 km northwest of Calgary.

The province is out with a warning of an aggressive grizzly bear north of Calgary after an attack over the weekend that left a hunter with serious injuries.

On Sunday, emergency crews responded to reports that a hunter was attacked by a female grizzly, who was with “sub-adult” bears, in a forested area near the hamlet of Madden, around 35 kilometres north of Calgary’s city limits.

The victim was reportedly with two other hunters and was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators with the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES) were able to determine that the same bear was responsible for a deadly attack in 2021 when a University of Calgary professor was killed by a bear near his home in Waiparous.

FWES officers are using aircraft and have set traps in an effort to find the grizzly.

Residents and visitors to the area are being asked to “exercise caution” and carry noisemakers and bear spray.

Anyone who sees a female grizzly with sub-adult bears, specifically in the area between Lochend Road and Highway 22, are being urged to report the sighting.
