Seventeen cows are dead after a semi truck carrying cattle crashed on a highway ramp in south Calgary late Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound Stoney Trail to southbound Macleod Trail ramp around 8:10 p.m. after getting reports that a truck carrying around 95 cattle had rolled over.

Calgary police say the driver lost control on the curved ramp and the truck rolled over and stopped in a ditch on the left side of the road.

A dashcam video posted to Reddit shows the truck travelling along the ramp at around 115 km/h before tipping over and sliding off the roadway.

Police tell CityNews the stretch of road was closed by emergency crews, who then spent several hours rounding up the animals who broke loose from the trailer.

Three cattle ran towards the south end of the Stoney and Macleod interchange, briefly causing a public safety concern. Officers along with cattle rustlers and highway crews spent almost two hours trying to corral the animals.

Police confirm 17 cows were killed due to the crash. The other were successfully rescued without injury.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“This was a highly dynamic situation which required inter-agency collaboration to ensure the safety and well-being of the cattle and the public,” says CPS acting Insp. Scott Neilson. “The swift response of all involved was crucial in managing this complex call and we are grateful for the support and professionalism demonstrated by everyone on the scene.”

Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, but speed is being investigated as a cause.
