With the help of their next-door neighbours, a Calgary couple is continuing a Halloween tradition of transforming their front yards into a scene that looks straight out of a horror film.
It’s a custom that’s been going strong for over 20 years on 15 Street SE in Inglewood. The idea started as a way for a Rick and Myla Tulsie to give back to the community, and it continues to grow larger each year.
“It’s always a lot of fun,” says Myla Tulsie. “And yes, it’s worth it.”
“It’s the excitement of the kids and just people coming through, and everybody looks forward to it so it makes for a really fun night.”
Over the years neighbours have joined in to help transform the stretch of homes into the ultimate Halloween experience.
“We just keep adding and adding, and the neighbours kids love it,” says Rick Tulsie. “We’ve had six-month-old kids that are now in their late 20s, that bring their kids through this. “
“It’s became a tradition just like that.”
Those who live in the area say the Tulsie’s is a must-see Halloween attraction each year. With some estimating they get up to 1,000 kids on a typical Halloween.
For the Tulsie’s, Halloween is special for another reason — not only is it the big day when they finally get to show off all their hard work and connect with their fellow Calgarians — it also happens to be Rick’s birthday.
“Come on down, and let’s enjoy this together,” says Rick. “This is for Calgary, this is for the community. It’s free so come do a walkthrough and if you’re an adult, come be a kid again.”
But you’ll have to hurry, because the decorations won’t be up for long.
“Tomorrow, it should all be gone,” says Myla.
