Calgary student sets world record for longest frisbee throw in wheelchair

A grade 5 Calgary student has set a new world record for the farthest distance a child in a wheelchair has thrown a frisbee.

Theo Begin, a 10-year-old at Citadel Park School in the city’s northwest, broke the World Flying Disc Federation record on Monday after an attempt during lunch hour in the school’s gymnasium.

“I was nervous and excited,” said Begin. “It was fun.”

The throw was measured from the throwing line to where the frisbee first hit the ground — an impressive 27 feet.

With friends, family and classmates from the school cheering him on, Theo made nine records in total.

“My heart’s sore, there’s a not a lot of things Theo gets to do,” said his mother Nadia McKenzie. “This was one of them, and with the support of the class, I’m having a hard time holding it together.”

“I’m proud of Theo and this was an amazing opportunity for him to experience.”

Guiness World Record Holder, Rob McLeod, also known as Frisbee Rob, is an advocate for youth development and helped to make the record attempt possible. 

McLeod says despite Theo’s struggle with Duchenne Muscular Dystropy, his resilience servas as a powerful source of inspiration to many.
