Calgary police marked the start of the holiday season with a massive check stop in the city’s southwest Saturday.
It started at around 8 p.m. on Stoney Trail and Fishcreek Boulevard.
More check stops are being added to mark National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
Throughout December, Calgary police will be working with RCMP, MADD Calgary, and Alberta Sherrifs to share important messaging about the risks of driving drunk or high.
Calgary police Chief Mark Neufeld told CityNews most fatal crashes can be avoided and asks Calgarians to plan safe trips.
He says speed, impairment, and distraction, are the three big issues that result in collisions in Calgary.
This year, there have been nearly 1,700 total impaired charges, with people failing to take an alcohol or drug test making up the bulk at over 1,200.
But this is a decline from 2023, which saw over 1,900 charges made.
When it comes to finding safe travel, police say having a designated driver, taking public transit, hiring a taxi or rideshare, or staying the night are all viable options.
CPS traffic section sergeant Brad Norman says drivers can expect an increase in impaired driving check stops throughout the month and that driving impaired is not tolerated on Calgary roads.
“We encourage Calgarians to safely enjoy holiday festivities, parties and events over the next several weeks, and encourage everyone to plan ahead for these types of outings, with the goal of everyone making it home safe at the end of the night,” he said.
