An 18-year-old is dead and two others are injured after a car collided with a crane in southwest Calgary on Monday night.
Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of Glenmore Trail SW, west of Crowchild Trail, around 9:45 p.m. for reports of a crash.
Calgary police say a 2018 BMW M240i was travelling eastbound on Glenmore when the driver lost control on a bend in the road and crashed into a stationary crane in the right shoulder.
The Calgary Fire Department says that crews arrive to find one person outside the vehicle and two others inside. Battalion Chief Scott Cowan says one of the two needed to be cut out of the car with the jaws of life.
The crane had broke down and the operator was trying to repair it on the side of the road when the crash happened, police say.
The driver of the BMW, a 19-year-old man, and two passenger were taken to hospital. An 18-year-old passenger was transported in life-threatening condition and died in hospital.
The driver suffered serious injuries and a 21-year-old passenger was treated for minor injuries. The crane operator was not hurt.
Investigators believe speed and impairment may have been factors in the crash and say charges against the driver are pending.
Glenmore was closed between Sarcee and Crowchild for several hours for the investigation but the road reopened around 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Anyone with information on the collision is being asked to call police at 403-266-1234.
