RCMP issue warning after 2 vehicles fall through ice at Sylvan Lake

Mounties are warning the public to keep off Sylvan Lake after two vehicles fell through the ice Saturday.

Sylvan Lake RCMP says the vehicles were completely submerged in water, but it adds no injuries were reported.

Police say the incident has prompted them to “highlight the urgent need for caution.”

The warning says Sylvan Lake’s ice thickness can vary significantly, and that current conditions aren’t safe for vehicles or other heavy equipment.

“We urge everyone to stay off the ice with motorized vehicles and to exercise extreme caution. Please prioritize safety,” the RCMP said.

A 58-year-old man operating a skid-steer loader died after he fell through the ice of a private pond in the rural municipality of Hanover, which is southeast of Winnipeg, on Christmas Eve.

Steinbach RCMP says his body was recovered later that day with the help of the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team.

Last year, police recovered the bodies of an Edmonton family in the water near an area by the Alexis Bridge in Lac Ste. Anne, northwest of Alberta’s capital.
