Tailor sexually assaulted young girl in SE Calgary shop: CPS

A man who works in a Calgary tailor shop is facing charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a young girl last year.

Calgary police say a woman and her daughter were at a store on 17 Avenue SE, just east of 36 Street SE, on Nov. 21 when they ran into a man they knew who worked at a nearby tailor shop.

It is alleged the man invited the girl to wait in his tailor shop while the mother shopped at a nearby store. The mother agreed and the girl joined the man inside Absalat Tailor.

Investigators further allege the man forced the girl to sit on his lap before “he touched her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her.”

The girl left the tailor shop, found her mother and told her what happened. The family reported the incident to police.

Officers went to Absalat Tailor on Dec. 12 and arrested 63-year-old Zufan Seyoum Gelete. Gelete is facing two charges for sexual assault and sexual interference with a person under 16.

He is expected to appear in court later this month.

Police say the girl and her family have been connected with LUNA Child & Youth Advocacy Centre for support.
