Police dog bites young girl in SE Calgary; ASIRT investigating

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a police dog bit a child in southeast Calgary on Wednesday afternoon.

Calgary police say officers were called to the community of Erin Woods around 2:55 p.m. for reports of a stolen vehicle in progress.

While officers were searching for the suspect, an on-duty police service dog bit a young girl who was in a nearby field.

The girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the incident.

“Due to the traumatic nature of this incident, the CPS is providing support to the child and her family and will fully cooperate with the ASIRT investigation,” reads a release from CPS.

ASIRT investigates any events where serious injury or death may have been caused by police.
