Calgary police say a man has died after trying to stop a fight outside of a restaurant early Monday morning.

A man has died after he was attacked while trying to stop a fight in southeast Calgary earlier this week.

Calgary police (CPS) say officers were called to an after-hours party at a restaurant near 17 Avenue and 28 Street SE around 6:20 a.m. on Monday for reports of a brawl.

Investigators say two men started fighting with each other before several others got involved. One man tried to deescalate the situation when he was allegedly struck in the head.

The victim was taken to a home in the northeast Calgary community of Marlborough by two friends, and was eventually picked up by a family member.

Around 3:30 p.m. the same day, the victim was found unconscious and rushed to hospital. He died of his injuries on Thursday, according to CPS.

Following an autopsy, the victim has been identified as 24-year-old Adonai Tekle.

Police have one person in custody and say charges are pending. The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
