Several weeks after 10-pound dog Bean fled her home through a gate left open by a utility worker, her family is holding onto hope.
And they are getting help from fellow Calgarians who have put up posters across the city, offering tips and joining ongoing searches for the seven-year-old papillion Aussie shepherd-cross.
Joe Jesseau and his wife Briana Jaroslawsky head out to follow up on possible sightings on some nights, and they toss and turn with broken hearts on others.
“I never thought I would have the feelings that I have for this dog. It’s unreal,” he told 660 NewsRadio.
Jesseau says it happened when Bean was let out in the morning on Jan. 30 at their Abbeydale home. At the same time, an Enmax technician came in through the back gate to do a meter reading, leaving the gate open for Bean to run through.
Enmax provided a statement to CityNews, apologizing and hoping that Bean would come home.
“It’s been three weeks. Still haven’t … got her back,” Jesseau said.
The family experienced the loss of two of their dogs due to old age in the past year, adding to the heartache of losing their Bean.
“Now this one’s being my last child. Gone,” Jesseau said.
However, he says the experience has reminded him how much he cherishes and loves Bean, a reflection of other pet owners and the love they have.
“Until something traumatic like this happens, and then you actually realize the love and care that actually you have for her,” Jesseau said.
“It’s beyond words how much you love your pet.”
Bean’s people will be at Elliston Park to look for any signs of the missing pup at 1 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join the search.
“We would like your help in helping us cross this off our search list once and for all. Everyone is welcome,” the post reads.
While it has been a challenging time with Bean still out there, Jesseau says the support his family received has shown them they are not alone.
“It feels good to have such positive feedback from the community — from the city. By all means, it has helped us cope with this because this hasn’t been a very good time at all,” Jesseau said.
“So it has been a tremendous amount of help, for sure. It feels good.”

He has a message for dog owners out there:
“Be vigilant of your animals when you let them outside, and make sure your gates are closed,” Jesseau said.
“And if you’re driving or walking or whatever the case may be, and see an animal or stray, call 311 immediately and post it or do anything because, obviously, you might be in the help of saving an animal that’s lost from their family, such as ours”
