Calgary Transit to see extension of fare validity, among other changes

Several changes are on the way for Calgary Transit riders, including an extension of ticket validity from 90 minutes to two hours…

Calgary city council has approved a number of big changes for transit riders that includes extending the length of time a fare is valid.

The motion put forward by Ward 3 Coun. Jasmine Mian last week included a list of 15 suggestions that aimed to address Calgary Transit’s growing ridership and improve customer service.

Council voted to approve the suggestions on Tuesday, including extending the duration of valid CTrain or bus fares from 90 minutes to two hours, eliminate or extend the expiration of digital tickets, and include the cost of a transit fare in the admission price of a hockey game or large event.

Other changes would see more up-to-date tracking of bus and CTrain locations, and arrival time information at major bus stops and busy areas, including university campuses or malls.

The motion does not outline potential costs or confirm whether these changes can be implemented within Calgary Transit’s existing budget. City administration is set to respond to the adopted suggestions in their mid-May transit update.

Calgary transit adult fares increased from $3.70 to $3.80 in 2025, while an adult monthly pass went up to $118 from $115.

The changes followed a vote from city council to increase fares to ensure transit revenue keeps up with operating costs and the city’s growth.
