Calgary has officially made the transition from ‘Be Part of the Energy’ to the ‘Blue Sky City’ as new signs were installed over the weekend.
The new branding and slogan were announced last April.
At the time, Calgary Economic Development (CED) said it pays tribute to the city’s 333 days of sunshine a year and also acknowledges the city’s deep Indigenous roots.
The visuals themselves use Indigenous beads and continue with the blue, red, and yellow colour scheme.
An agency who completed research for Calgary Economic Development said the old slogan — ‘Be Part of the Energy’ — didn’t represent all Calgarians and contributed to a “one dimensional view” that non-Albertans have towards the city.
The sign appear at nine city limit locations with a new sign going up along 17 Avenue SE at the eastern boundary of the city.
More than 129 organizations were consulted about the change.
The city has spent $1.7 million on brand development and rollout, CED says. The total cost of the sign replacement project is estimated to be $140,000, according to the city.
