Calgary Police say the driver killed in a fiery crash insouthwest Calgary Wednesday morning was a 16-year-old boy.

The driver killed in a fiery crash in southwest Calgary on Wednesday morning was a teenage boy, police say.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Crowchild Trail north of 50 Avenue SW around 8:20 a.m. for reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Calgary police say a white 2009 Lincoln MKX was in the far-right northbound lane of Crowchild while a 2011 Lincoln MKX was in the lane next to it. The 2011 Lincoln changed lanes to the right and struck the 2009 Lincoln.

The collision forced the 2009 Lincoln into the east shoulder of Crowchild where it struck a large concrete pole holding up a traffic sign.

The vehicle burst into flames and the driver, a 16-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the 2011 Lincoln, a 47-year-old man, initially left the area but came back shortly after the crash. The man and the young child passenger who were in the 2011 Lincoln were not hurt.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash and say speed is a possible factor, while impairment is not being considered.
