One person is dead after being hit by a freight train in Calgary’s southeast early Monday morning.
Calgary police say it happened just after 1 a.m. at 10 Avenue and 1 Street SE.
Investigators now say the 160-car train was travelling west at a low rate of speed through an enclosed building between 1 Street SE and 1 Street SW.
As the train approached Centre Street, it hit a person police say was lying across the rail line.
The train stretched 10,000 feet from the scene and stopped at 15 Street SE near 9 Avenue SE and blocked traffic for some time.
The man in his 20s was left with “catastrophic” injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
Foul play is not believed to be a factor, but investigators are still looking into the circumstances that led to the man being on the rail line.
Anyone who was in the area at the time who may have information about this incident is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
