Updates to golf in Calgary as the city prepares for upcoming season

By Shergene Chiew

As Calgary continues to see warmer weather, people can look forward to golfing in the city again.

Six of the city’s seven courses are now open for the season – the seventh location, Lakeview 9, set to open soon.

“This will be a special year of golf in Calgary with the Shaganappi Bunker Renovation officially getting the green light to begin this spring,” said John Faber, lead golf operations.

Courses typically renovate their bunkers every 15 to 20 years for functional reasons, to enhance playability and eliminate maintenance challenges, according to the city.

It says it’s planning to reduce the total square footage of bunkers on its course to improve conditions and lower maintenance costs, adding the changes to the course will enhance playability.

Temporary greens may need to be used while specific holes are under construction.

Youth and young adults aged eight to 24 from non-profit organizations, school groups, adaptive programs and community partners can also take golf lessons through several subsidy programs that the city offers.

“By offering subsidized programs for youth from diverse backgrounds, we ensure that everyone has a chance to experience the joy and benefits of golf,”  said Golf Program Specialist Gennie Liu.

The city’s Indoor Golf Dementia Program is also continuing, expanding this spring and summer after a successful pilot last year.

The city also holds community events for golfers and non-golfers throughout the season.
