Large dog killed woman’s cat in SE Calgary after forcing its way into home

A Calgary man is facing charges after a bizarre dog attack in the city’s southeast last week.

Community Safety with the City of Calgary confirms the incident occurred in the community Rangeview on Apr. 16.

A statement from the city says a large “Mastiff-type” dog was running around unleashed when it approached a woman who was leaving her home with her own dog.

The woman went back inside out of fear and the dog managed to follow her inside where it ended up killing the family cat, according to the statement.

The owner of the dog has been charged under the Responsible Pet OwnerShip Bylaw with an animal causing death to another animal, and animal running at large.

The city says no decision has been made as to the future of the dog.

“Community Safety has no prior history with this dog, and there have been no previous warnings or animal designations issued to the owner regarding its behavior,” reads the statement from the city.

“We are working to determine the appropriate course of action.”

The investigation is ongoing.
