Calgary to allow sale of cannabis at 18+ events

The City of Calgary will soon start allowing the sale of cannabis at adult-only events.
The move comes after Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) implemented a change last year to allow existing cannabis retailers to set up a temporary shop while at events for people 18 and older — where consumption is already allowed.
City administration recommended the city follow suit, saying in addition to people illegally purchasing it, there was a sort of legal loophole in place already. Cannabis shops are allowed to deliver product, meaning people can legally buy product in a roundabout way while at an event.
City council approved an amendment to the Business Licence Bylaw on Tuesday to align with the provincial changes.
“The new bylaw is a positive change for local businesses,” says Michael Briegel, the city’s deputy chief of business safety in a statement. “This opens doors for Calgary cannabis businesses to engage in large events, strengthening community bonds and boosting the local economy.”
Some councillors previously expressed concern that allowing the sale at events would be an example of the city footing the bill for the province’s ideas, arguing the province should be willing to pay for.
The changes will come into effect on May 15 and only retailers with active business licences will be allowed to sell products at the events. More information can be found here.
