Calgary’s 4 Avenue flyover reopens to two lanes of traffic ahead of official project completion

Some good news for downtown Calgary commuters, on Tuesday the 4th avenue flyover reopened to traffic during peak hours, which the city says is ahead of schedule.

Tuesday will be the first day in more than a year that two lanes of traffic will travel over the 4 Avenue flyover in Calgary, as construction on the bridge nears its end.

The city says work on the flyover will continue through the summer, but two lanes will be open on the bridge during peak hours ahead of schedule.

Improvements to the bridge started in April 2024 and come with a pricetag of $12.5 million.

City officials say the investment will keep the longest bridge in Calgary functional and in good condition for Calgarians to use for decades to come.

“Thanks to strong collaboration between City staff, consultants and contractors, efficient scheduling, and innovative construction methods, we’re proud to have reached this milestone ahead of schedule for our fellow Calgarians,” said project manager Max Lacroix. “Calgarians have a busy summer ahead of them and reopening both lanes on the flyover will help ease the congestion that commuters will experience when heading downtown.”

Finishing touches will see single lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. over the summer to fully complete the work on the bridge.

There won’t be any closures during the Calgary Stampede to keep traffic moving smoothly, the city adds.

The site is still an active construction area, so drivers are asked to continue to proceed with caution and respect all the posted signage while crews finish up.
