After heat warnings were issued for areas east of Calgary, the city now finds itself under one on Canada Day.
Environment Canada says Calgary temperatures will reach 28 C, along with a low of 14 C overnight, for the next two days.
Like in areas like Strathmore, Canmore, and Drumheller, Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day, with highs in the 30s.
However, meteorologists expect the temperature to cool by Thursday.
“Take action to protect yourself and others–extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. Determine if you or others around you are at greater risk of heat illness,” the warning reads.
“Check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people in-person or on the phone multiple times a day.”
Signs of heat exhaustion include headaches, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, and intense fatigue. If you are experiencing any of these, stop what you’re doing, find some shade, and drink water.
While Environment Canada says to limit direct exposure to the sun and heat, “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” being around the corner may give more reason to stay cool.
It recommends wearing lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat; never leave people, especially children or pets, inside a parked vehicle; and check your vehicle before locking to make sure no one is left behind.
And if you’re planning your Stampede outfits, Sneak-A-Peek Thursday looks to hit 25 C, while parade day should be a more comfortable 20 C.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Mariana Greenoff says early next week will possibly see some showers.
“It does look like it’s going to be somewhat unsettled and showery, which is sort of what happens when we get into these troughs, which is what gives us the cooler temperatures,” she told 660 NewsRadio.
“So usually you can expect to see your afternoon thundershowers or afternoon into early evening, even showers, maybe an isolated thundershower here or there. And that kind of looks like what the pattern is setting up to be.”
She says the following week could also see higher temperatures that could potentially reach a heat wave in the mid-to-late part of the week.
