The Bar U Ranch southwest of Calgary is on the hunt for a missing painting that was recently sold by mistake.

In a post to social media, the Friends of the Bar U Ranch say the painting, ‘Bison on the Western Range,’ was mistakenly sold on July 8 from the gift shop of the national historic site along Highway 22.

Laurie Rowe with the ranch says a new staff member looked up the price of piece in inventory after someone asked if it was for sale.

“They took it down, there was no price tag on it, but she was able to look it up in inventory and sold it for the amount in inventory,” Rowe says.

The piece by local artist Corrie Buwalda is an interpretation of what the area the ranch sits on looked like before it became a ranch.

“This is what the people that wanted to settle here would have come up and seen, and that’s what they would have fallen in love with,” says Rowe.

The ranch is offering a full refund to whoever bought the painting.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Friends of the Bar U.
