Fixing pets for a good cause — the Calgary Humane Society is hosting a free spay and neuter drive starting Sunday for pet owners who don’t have the funds to pay.

For some owners, the offer couldn’t come at a better time.

The Dave family says money is tight because of long-term medical issues.

We have two kids at home. We have one going to university. It’s a bad thing to say, but we don’t have the money to get her spayed,” said Charlotte Dave, “I’m so glad they have these types of things going on.”

The procedure to spay or neuter a pet can be expensive, and a barrier for many.

“For a large breed dog, it can be just under $1,000 for a lot of these spay and neuter surgeries, which is simply unattainable for a lot of families right now,” said Carrie Fritz with the Humane Society.

In 2024, the Humane Society administered spay and neuter procedures to 49 animals, while 177 were waitlisted.

The organization has already exceeded that number this year.

“We’re almost at 92, and we hope to eventually — for the whole suite of programs — help 1,500 animal families this year,” Fritz said.

The society is aiming to raised $70,000 through the drive, as donations will be matched by the company Petsecure.
