Severe thunderstorm watch for Calgary ends

A severe thunderstorm watch for the City of Calgary issued Friday, meaning a chance for strong winds, large hail, and heavy rain, has ended.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said thunderstorms would form in the afternoon and into the early evening, but ended the watch at around 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, ECCC meteorologist Christy Climenhaga says a cold front, which generated thunderstorms throughout parts of central and northern Alberta Thursday, is moving south, bringing that thunderstorm risk.

“We’ve got some good instability and shear–all of those things give the ingredients for stronger thunderstorms,” she told 660 NewsRadio.

“Things like hail, heavy downpour, strong winds, even the potential for some ice, an isolated tornado, are not out of the question. So it’s something to keep in mind for your plans tonight.”

She says storms will drift to the east late in the evening, so storms could form along the Foothills, along with storms developing around the Calgary area before moving east towards southwestern Saskatchewan.

The ECCC issues severe thunderstorm watches when there are favourable conditions for thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
