What’s open and closed in Calgary over August long weekend

As we say goodbye to July and wave hello to August, it means the Heritage Day long weekend is here.
Some businesses will be closed on the holiday Monday, and others will operate on reduced hours. Here’s what you need to know about closures over the holiday long weekend:
Attractions
- Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday
- Heritage Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday
- TELUS Spark will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday
Banks
Most major banks will be closed on Monday
Calgary Public Library
Calgary Public Library locations will be closed on Monday
Canada Post
Canada Post locations will be closed on Monday, and no mail will be delivered
Grocery and liquor
Most grocery stores and liquor stores will be open on the holiday, some may have reduced hours. Check your local store for more details.
Costco locations will be open on Monday, but will not be doing deliveries.
Recreation facilities/programs
All city-operated arenas, indoor pools and fitness centres will be closed on Monday.
Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres, Calgary Soccer Centre, North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Art Centres, and Animal Services Centre will be closed on Monday.
Registered programs and swimming lessons will not run Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. Drop-in programs will not be offered on Monday, but will be available Saturday and Sunday.
Shopping malls
- CF Chinook Centre – open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday
- CF Market Mall – open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday
- CORE Shopping Centre – open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
- CrossIron Mills – open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday
- Marlborough Mall – open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
- Southcentre – open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday
- Sunridge Mall – open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday
Calgary Transit
Buses, CTrains and On Demand will be operating on a Sunday level of service on Monday.
The CTrain Red Line will be closed between Lions Park and 7 Street SW stations from Saturday to Monday. Shuttle buses will run in place of trains and service all of the impacted stations.

Parking
On Monday, parking will be free in on-street ParkPlus zones. Weekend rates will apply at Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots.
Regular rates will be in effect at partner lots, such as TELUS Spark, University District, Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.

Road closures
The following is a list of road closures and construction taking place in Calgary over the long weekend.
Northwest
- Sunnyside Flood Barrier: Lane closure on eastbound Memorial Drive from 10 Street N.W. to Centre St N. Westbound Memorial Drive is single lane in both directions. Signal timing has been adjusted to optimize traffic flow.
- Bowness Road N.W. between 62 Street and 66 Street N.W.: Full road closure on Aug. 4 for Tour de Bowness.
Northeast
- 32 Avenue at 36 Street N.E.: lane closures in effect from Aug. 4 to Aug. 15 for concrete curb work. Expect delays.
- McKnight Boulevard from Barlow Trail N.E. to 47 Street N.E.: varying westbound lane closures in effect (right lanes and left-turn bay) from Aug. 2 to Oct. 31 daily from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the week and 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weekends for concrete work and paving. The speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/h and Calgary Police Service will be on-site for traffic control. Expect major delays and avoid the area, if possible.
Southeast
- Ramsay-Inglewood Public Realm Improvements: starting Aug. 1, 11 Street S.E. between 21 Avenue S.E. and Portland Street S.E. will be temporarily closed for approximately 4 days for northbound and southbound traffic. This work is for underground utility installations being completed in coordination between The City and CPKC.
- Stephen Avenue Project: The following will be closed from 9 p.m. on Aug.1 to 5 a.m. on Aug. 5 for deep utility work.
- 1 Street and 7 Avenue and 10 Avenue S.E: Three west lanes closed southbound.
- 9 Avenue between Centre Street and 1 Street S.E.: Only two north lanes open eastbound.
- Anderson Road between Macleod Trail and Deerfoot Trail S.E.: from Aug. 1 to Aug. 10, eastbound and westbound 2 left lanes and 2 right lanes closures (where 3 lanes exist) are in effect for milling and paving. Speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/h.
- Barlow Trail S.E. between Memorial Drive and 17 Avenue S.E.: from Aug. 2 to Aug. 3, full road closure and ramp to Barlow Trail from eastbound Memorial Drive closed nightly for Chasing Summer Festival.
Southwest
- Glenmore Trail (Crowchild Trail to 14 Street S.W.): from Aug.1 to Sept. 18, the left lane will be closed in both directions nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., excluding Sundays, for concrete repair work in preparation for paving. The speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/h and Calgary Police Service will be on-site for traffic control.
- 4 Street S.W. at 30 Avenue S.W.: from Aug. 1 to Aug. 4 the intersection will be fully closed for watermain deep utility work. Follow detour provided or use alternative route.
- 6 Avenue S.W. from 5 Street to 6 Street S.W.: daily single right lane or dual right lane closures will be in effect from Aug. 1 to Sept. 3 for building exterior work.
- 10 Avenue S.W. between 1 Street S.W. and 2 Street S.W.: road will be fully closed from Aug. 2 to Aug. 3 for a crane lift. Follow detour provided or use alternative route.
