Red Deer woman killed in crash involving stolen vehicle; man facing charges

A man is facing more than half a dozen charges after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle while impaired in a collision that left a Red Deer woman dead earlier this week.

Red Deer RCMP say officers were called to the area of 40 Avenue and 22 Street around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a serious crash between a pickup truck and an SUV.

Responding officers learned that a stolen pickup truck was travelling at high speeds and hit an SUV.

Police say bystanders started helping the SUV driver while the stolen pickup truck driver tried to steal the bystanders vehicles. The suspect was able to flee in a stolen SUV.

Officers found the stolen SUV after it was involved in another crash on 39 Street. The suspect ran away on foot but was found nearby by police and arrested.

The driver of the SUV involved in the original crash, a 46-year-old woman from Red Deer, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Red Deer County resident Ryan Allan Bell, 33, is facing eight charges including impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, two counts of vehicle theft, and breaking and entering.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in a Red Deer courtroom next week.
