24 tickets issued in joint Calgary Police, RCMP, Alberta Sheriffs operation

Two-dozen tickets were given out to drivers in southeast Calgary last month during a joint traffic enforcement operation.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) says it worked with Alberta Sheriffs and the RCMP for the operation on Aug. 21.

Officers were on Macleod Trail SW and Highway 2A for about an hour. The corridor is heavily traveled and has seen devastating collisions in the past, often linked to speeding.

To help address this issue, police say other joint enforcement issues are being planned for the future.

During the Aug. 21 check stop, 14 tickets were issued for speeding, including to one driver who was traveling 33 km/h over the limit.

Eight tickets were issued for equipment violations and failure to produce documents.

One ticket was given to a driver who didn’t stop at a stop sign and another was handed out to someone who ran a red light.

“It may sound like a common saying, but the truth is speed kills,” said CPS Staff Sgt. Scott Neilson, co-ordinator of the joint operation. “Drivers must slow down. No matter how skilled you think you are, when you’re driving at the speeds our officers are seeing, you simply can’t react quickly enough to sudden changes on the road.”

Neilson says the operation was successful thanks to the collaboration between the different law enforcement agencies.

“Our officers have attended some truly tragic collisions this summer caused by speeding,” he said. “Once those crash scenes are cleared, it’s the families who are left to deal with the heartbreak.”
