A six-month long drug trafficking investigation has led to the charges being laid against a Calgary man, police say.

A man was involved in a traffic stop on Monday, Jan. 27, according to police, and raised suspicion that he may be involved in drug trafficking. The next month, an officer with the District 1 patrol team launched an investigation into the man with the help of Alberta Sheriffs.

The investigation progressed, and officers executed a search warrant in mid-August at a house associated with the suspect on 11 Avenue SE.

The search resulted in the seizure of cocaine, methamphetamine, cocaine capsules, a digital weigh scale, drug paraphernalia, packaging material, five cellphones, identity documents, more than $40,000 in Canadian currency, and a small amount of American money.

Thirty-year-old Mauricio Romero has since been charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000 (Canadian currency), and one count of possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000 (U.S. currency), and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

His next court date is Wednesday.

Anyone with information related to suspected drug trafficking happening in Calgary is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or make an anonymous tip to CrimeStoppers.
