17-year-old driver dies after SUV crash into parked vehicles

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 17-year-old girl, sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and since died. 

A teen girl has died in hospital after the SUV she was driving collided with parked cars in southeast Calgary last week.

Police say the collision happened around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday when a 2025 Volkswagen SUV was heading north on 26 Street SE, near 25 Avenue SE.

Investigators say the SUV struck a parked 2007 GMC Savana. The impact pushed the GMC into another parked vehicle, a 2017 Mazda 3. Both parked vehicles were unoccupied.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 17-year-old girl, was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Police provided an update on Monday saying she died of her injuries.

Investigators are looking into whether speed played a role in the crash.
