A young woman is facing charges after she allegedly injured an RCMP officer south of Calgary earlier this week.
On Wednesday, Sept. 17, around 6:30 p.m., Turner Valley RCMP was dispatched to a report of a stolen GMC Sierra.
An officer responded to the call and found the stolen truck in Eden Valley, driving on Stoney Trail Road at a high rate of speed.
RCMP say an officer was stopped on the road when the stolen truck swerved at the last moment, hitting the front passenger side of the police vehicle.
This caused the airbags to deployed and resulted in significant damage to both vehicles.
Although the officer was injured, they were still abler to arrest the woman driving the stolen vehicle.
Eighteen-year-old Shantaya Lefthand has been charged with assault with a weapon causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, theft over $5,000, and mischief over $5,000.
The officer was taken to a Calgary hospital for treatment and has since been released.
After a hearing, Lefthand was released from custody. She is scheduled to appear in court in Diamond Valley on Oct. 14.
