Police investigating after fatal altercation between seniors at Lethbridge care home

Lethbridge Police are investigating the suspicious death of an 87-year-old man following a fight with another resident at a long-term care facility.

The incident occurred on Aug. 27 at St. Michael’s Health Centre. According to police, the elderly victim was involved in a physical altercation with another male resident of the facility shortly after 6 a.m.

He was transported to hospital by EMS, where he later died.

Police were alerted to the death the following day, prompting a criminal investigation.

Investigators say the two men were known to each other and lived in the same unit. There is no video surveillance in resident rooms or common hallways at the facility, which police say has complicated the investigation.

The other male resident involved in the incident continues to reside at St. Michael’s, but police say there is no evidence to suggest an ongoing risk to others.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details have been released.
