Sundre RCMP lay charges after man with shotgun leads to school lockdowns, shelter in place

Sundre RCMP say a man carrying a shotgun near a school is facing several charges after shelter-in-place and lockdown orders were placed Friday.

Mounties say they were called to the area at around 7:30 a.m. on reports of a “male walking near a local school with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun.” The report led to local schools being placed on lockdown, and police issuing a shelter-in-place order.

Officers from Sundre, Didsbury, Olds, and Police Dog Services responded to a tip pointing them to the suspect.

This led them to hide out at a home on 4 Street while officers searched for the alleged suspect.

However, RCMP say the suspect left a home on the street and surrendered to officers at around 9:15 a.m.

Afterwards, officers searched the home and seized four firearms, an unsecured loaded shotgun, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and meth.

The man arrested is 33-year-old Jason Kelly Burns. Police say he is from Mountain View County; the Town of Sundre is in that municipality. Calgary is roughly 100 kilometres away and south of Sundre.

Burns faces six charges, which include assault, uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a controlled substance.

Mounties say he is expected to appear in court on Sept. 29.
