1 dead in multi-vehicle crash on SW Sarcee Trail; Calgary police say speed, impairment factors

Calgary Police are investigating a serious crash on Friday night, that left one person dead, and closed off a major roadway overnight.

A man has been killed in a multi-vehicle collision on a southwest Calgary highway on Friday, police say.

It happened when a man in his 40s, driving a silver car, was travelling north into oncoming traffic on Sarcee Trail between Bow Trail and 17 Avenue SW before 9 p.m.

Officers say the car then sideswiped a minivan, which had a male driver in his 60s and a teenage passenger, then travelled a short distance before smashing into an SUV head-on.

EMS tells 660 NewsRadio they arrived at 9 p.m. and immediately determined the driver of the car was dead, then sorted through the other vehicles to determine their involvement.

The driver of the SUV, a man in his 40s, was taken to Foothills Medical Centre with minor injuries, while the minivan occupants were treated on scene.

Meanwhile, investigators say speed and impairment on the car driver’s part are being considered factors in the collision.

That affected section of Sarcee Trail was closed until around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
