Brooks RCMP officer suspended following assault, choking charges

An RCMP officer from Brooks has been suspended with pay following an investigation into his off-duty conduct.

RCMP say an investigation began on Nov. 20 into the behaviour of 40-year-old Cpl. Michael Hagel.

It is unclear what prompted the investigation.

The officer has since been charged with assault and assault by choking.

Hagel is a nine-year veteran of the RCMP.

He was released on a release order after a hearing with conditions to attend court in Brooks on Jan. 7.

Alberta RCMP declined to provide further information, citing the ongoing court case.
