John Hufnagel leaving Calgary Stampeders for Argos after 18 years

After rejoining the Calgary Stampeders in 2008, John Hufnagel has decided to move on.

Although he calls the decision bittersweet, he’s off to Toronto as senior advisor to the general manager and head coach for the Argonauts.

“I’m very proud of what we accomplished in Calgary since my return to the organization in 2008 and I sincerely thank everyone who helped make that happen,” Hufnagel said. “I also thank Stampeders fans for always making me feel welcome and for their friendship over the years.”

Hufnagel’s legacy in Calgary spans decades as a player, head coach, GM, president, and — most recently — special advisor.

He leaves having helped the team to four Grey Cup victories.

Current general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson said in a statement released Thursday that the organization is lucky to have had Huff for so long.

“The Calgary Stampeders organization – and that very much includes myself – has been very fortunate to benefit from Huff’s wisdom and leadership. I was hoping he would remain with the club but I respect his decision to pursue a new challenge and we wish him the best of luck,” he said. “I know our fans join us in thanking Huff for everything he accomplished over the past 18 years and for the remarkable legacy he created.”
