The city says it’s implementing temporary measures to limit underground construction activity as work continues along the Bearspaw South Feeder Main.
Ward 1 Coun. Kim Tyers says the decision comes after residents and small business owners in the area shared concerns that additional construction activity in the area would only worsen traffic issues.
“By limiting underground construction near the existing pipe and new replacement pipe, we are relieving some of the pressure on these communities and ensuring we are doing our best to maintain the integrity of the feeder main until its full replacement,” said Tyers in a statement.
The new measures mean no digging within 10 metres of the feeder main and limited permissions for underground utility or service work on nearby roads.

The city says the measures will not impact residents who want to do renovation work or landscaping, or those who apply for a change of use or Business License on their private property.
City staff will be reaching out to anyone with existing development and construction permits to make them aware of the changes.
The city recently announced water restrictions will be returning again in just over two weeks time to allow for reinforcements to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main.
Construction on the planned reinforcements is scheduled to start March 9 and last for approximately four weeks.
The feeder main will be taken out of service to complete construction. During this time, outdoor water use will not be permitted and indoor water conservation will be in effect.
